Health – Center Of It All

Standard

In feng Shui and in life, health is key.

The center area of the Feng Shui Bagua represents Health. It touches all other areas of the Bagua, just as the state of your health affects every area of your life, right? Your health affects your creativity, your children, your relationships, your reputation, your finances, your family, your ability to learn, to travel and most definitely affects your career.

There are many things in the center of your home/Bagua that may be affecting your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health on an energetic level. To learn where your center is, review my blog, Your Space Reflects Your Life – What Is Yours Saying?

The center of your home, as a reflection of your health, should feel safe and welcoming. It’s a bonus if you can actually sit in your center. Add the color Yellow (which is the Feng Shui Health color) or the element of Earth (anything square, earth tones or earthy material such as ceramics) to your center to give your health a boost.

If you have any of these situations in your Bagua center, they could be affecting your physical, mental, emotional or spiritual health:

  1. Clutter = Stuck energy and it drains you physically and mentally. It can cause fatigue and depression as well as weight issues or a sense of heaviness. For tips on clearing clutter, check out these blogs:
Clear Clutter Once and For All!
    Clearing Clutter in “Disguise”
Do You Need a Clutter Buster?
  2. Bathrooms = Health going down the drain or getting flushed away. We love our metaphors in Feng Shui! For more of the dirty details and what to do to alleviate the draining energy, check out my blog Down the Drain: How Toilets Affect your Life.
  3. Hallway = Energy picking up too much speed, feeling like you can’t catch your breath or slow down enough to relax. If your bedroom is at the end of a long hallway, this can cause digestive issues.
  4. Stairs = Up and down health.
  5. Stove, Fireplace or Furnace = Burn up your health.

As always, whenever you are doing an adjustment, your intention is the most important ingredient.

Remember, never make adjustments when you are tired, angry, lonely or hungry. You want to feel good when making changes to put good energy into your space!

There are many areas besides your center that can be affecting your health. If you are having serious health issues, I recommend consulting with a professional Feng Shui practitioner to help shift the energy and support your return to optimal health.

Clear Clutter Once and For All!

Standard

Clear Clutter Once and For All using the KonMari Method of Tidying Up!

Clutter is not Feng Shui’s friend. I’ve written about this topic before in Do You Need a Clutter Buster? and Clearing Clutter in Disguise. There are great and useful tips in those blogs.

So why am I bringing it up again?

  1. Because despite my best efforts, I still have some clutter and I know you do too.
  2. I discovered an amazing decluttering method that actually works and had me clearing bags and bags of clutter from places in my home I didn’t think were cluttered!
  3. Clutter represents stuck energy in Feng Shui. It energetically drains you, lowers your vibration and can cause weight gain, fatigue, brain fog and many other issues.
  4. I want to help you allow the energy to FLOW in your space. And, with the clutter cleared, your Feng Shui adjustments will be much more effective! Essentially, doing this work will create a vacuum attracting everything you want right into your virtual vortex.

Marie Kondo, author of the Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has spent a lifetime of trial and error figuring out the most effective method for decluttering your space. She had literally been obsessed with tidying (don’t you just love that word?) since she was a little girl.

How is the KonMari decluttering method different?

  1. Tidying (or decluttering) only needs to be done once. Marie’s clients have never had a relapse which is proof her system works. Having only done the first 2 parts of the system (clothes and books) I can already see how this works and more importantly FEEL the difference in my space.

  2. The KonMari Method shifts the way you look at and experience the things in your home, teaching you how to make decisions with your heart, not your head!

  3. Marie’s method honors your possessions by caring for them and finding a permanent place for everything in you home to “live”

Breakdown of the KonMari Method

A) Tidying involves 2 actions:

     1. Discarding
     2. Deciding where to store the items you choose to keep

B) Clear clutter by category, not by place. I mentioned this briefly in my Do You Need a Clutter Buster blog. However, Marie’s book breaks this down for you by providing a specific order:

     1. Clothes
     2. Books
     3. Papers
     4. Miscellaneous
     5. Mementos

C) Discarding
The KonMari Method introduces a twist to this time-worn decluttering tradition. Instead of focusing on what to throw away, you are focusing on decising what to keep.  And here’s the golden nuggest of advice to take from this book and blog, if you don’t read further:

1. Take everything in that category out whereever it may be in the house and put it all in one place to sort.

2. Decide by picking up, touching and holding every single item and feeling what energy this sparks for you. You ONLY keep the item if it “sparks joy!” This means that you don’t think about whether you wore it yesterday or have never worn it, how much it cost, who gave it to you and so on. The only standard you use in deciding whether to keep something is if you LOVE it.

I also like Marie’s method because she thanks the items being discarded for their service. Even if you never used something, it has fulfilled it’s role. It may have brought you joy when you purchased it or when you received it or it may have been useful in some way. Someone else will love this item or if it’s broken, it may be time for it’s retirement.

D) Storage
You’ve heard this before – A place for everything and everything in it’s place, right? The way Marie determines where things should go is unique because:

  1. All things of the same category are stored together. Take safey pins, for example. How many of these to you have all over the house? Pulling them all out and putting them in one spot helps you see how much you have (and need) of things. I personally discovered a stash of toilet paper I had totally forgotten about. Needless to say, I won’t need to buy that for a while!
  1. Placing things where you put them away, not where you use them. It takes only a moment to grab something from it’s storage space, yet not knowing where you put something can cost you literally hours of time searching for it.
  1. Marie likens your items not having a home to you not having an address. Your things feel lost and uncared for. They don’t wear as well, look as good and often will break.

Folding
Marie recommends folding clothes so that you are able to see all the edges in the drawer. Folding clothes helps you see stains and tears and shows you care for your clothes so they will last longer.

Fold each piece into a simple smooth rectangle by folding the sides in first, then in 1/2 or 1/3.  Folded clothes when standing on edge should fit the height of the drawer. See Marie’s book or You tube videos for further instructions on how to fold. Fold socks in half and then in thirds with toes inside. Rolling them stretches out the bands.

Arrange clothes in your closet (the ones that seem to like to hang better) so they rise to the right. This means the heavier, longer and darker color clothes will be on the left.

Seasonal suggestion
Marie recommends keeping all of your clothes out (once you clear those you don’t love, you will have room) and simply organizing them by weight.

One of the key Feng Shui principles is that everything is energy. Your possessions, like your home itself, need to be treated with care. Making sure you surround yourself only with things you love and making sure everything has a home shows appreciation, respect and love for your things and results in those things loving you back by lasting longer and looking better.

Feeling Stuck? Clean Your House!

Standard

I have a confession. A few weeks ago my house was really dirty. I mean, like you could write your name in the dust on my dresser dirty. And the sand in my back entry hall filled a dust pan! Those of you who live in winter wonderlands know what I’m talking about, right? Somehow the sand they spread on the roads to keep cars from slipping just appears in the house, like magic, except not as much fun.

The dirt was getting to me. I was also feeling stuck, unmotivated and even a bit lethargic. So, I took a day off from working to clean.

I don’t really love cleaning. I know there are people who do love it. I love having a clean house, but scrubbing the floors, dusting, vacuuming and cleaning toilets is not my idea of a great way to spend my day off.

But I did it. And, I enjoyed it. Really, I did!!

Cleaning your home is a great way to shake things up and get back in the flow. Your home, whether it’s an apartment, a condo, a dorm room or a mansion, is meant to support you. The better care you take of your home, the better your home can take care of you!

While I cleaned my home, I felt gratitude for these things:

  • Sand ~ helps us keep traction on the roads
  • Peace Lily ~ fragrant blooming flowers and greenery
  • Kitchen table ~ a place for community
  • Stove ~ cooks my food (tied to wealth & health)
  • Refrigerator ~ keeps everything cold and fresh
  • Toilet ~ indoor plumbing when it’s below zero outside
  • Toilet Brush ~ so I don’t have to stick my hand in the toilet!

Cleaning your home, top to bottom, really well, is a way of thanking your home for supporting you. Cleaning naturally involves moving things around which shifts the energy in your space. It’s like removing the cog in a wheel that’s been stuck which suddenly allows you to get rolling and move forward again!

Down the Drain ~ How toilets affect your life

Toilets are draining energy
Standard

Indoor plumbing is a great convenience. I shudder to think what it would be like to use an outhouse during one of our freezing Minnesota winters!

Toilets are a necessity yet in Feng Shui they represent draining energy. Toilets contain the biggest drains in your home in comparison to sinks, showers or bathtubs. They can literally be a drain on health or wealth or whichever area of your home they are located. The good news is that very simple Feng Shui adjustments can help get things flowing in the right direction again!

In my prior home, we had a bathroom located in the center, which correlates to the Health area. This played out for me as I underwent two surgeries while living there – a hysterectomy and a gall bladder removal. One of my clients had a bathroom in the center of her home as well as a furnace (draining her health and burning it up at the same time!). She had quite a variety of health issues while living there including a tumor that had to be removed. These were mitigated by a few simple Feng Shui adjustments. She ultimately decided to move and has felt healthier in her new space.

In my current home, I have a bathroom in my Wealth corner. To say this has been a challenge is the understatement of the year. When I first moved in, I had the momentum of a great GoldSwap business going, which lasted a couple years. In the last two years, the draining energy of that bathroom in Wealth has taken a toll on my bank account. Thankfully, with the Feng Shui adjustments I have made, things are beginning to turn around! I’ll share more about what I did to address this in the tips below.

Challenging Bathroom Locations

  •  Center of Home ~ drains your health
  •  First seen upon Entry ~ leads to digestive issues
  •  Visible from Kitchen ~ leads to weight/health issues
  •  Wealth area ~ money goes down the drain
  •  Visible from Bed ~ drains energy while you sleep
  •  Over the Stove ~ puts out the fire of wealth and health
  •  Over the Front Door ~ douses opportunities
  •  Upon Entering a Business ~ sets the wrong tone

If you are building or looking for a new home, the best location for a bathroom is outside. Just kidding…unless you really like outhouses! Having the bathroom situated between two guas (areas) of your home is the best placement along the perimeter (not in the center of the home). Refer to my recent post explaining the Feng Shui Bagua. The Bagua is a  mental map that is placed on your home showing where the nine life areas are located.

What Can You Do to Minimize the Draining Effect?

  1.  Keep a lid on it: keep toilet seats closed
  2.  Contain it: keep the bathroom door closed, especially if it can be seen upon entering your home or from the kitchen or bed
  3.  Raise the energy: Place a mirror on each wall of the bathroom (inside or outside walls). The idea is to draw the energy up and out of the drain
  4.  Add plants: Plants are considered a wood element which gives the water something to do (soaks it up)

Simple changes CAN affect the flow of energy into and throughout your home. One client could not get her husband and son to put the toilet seats down, even when she told them how unsanitary it was (Dr. Oz talks about the bacteria floating up into the air as you flush). But when she told them it was poor Feng Shui, they complied!

Check to see where the bathrooms are in your home and pick one action above to reduce their draining energy. Post here or on my Finding Your Fiji Facebook page to share!
