How to Shake Up Your Chi

Standard

Clients often share with me that they feel stuck or unmotivated or that they cannot shift a particular area of their life and as a result are feeling frustrated. Sometimes things were going well and then they suddenly feel they have hit a plateau. When this happens, I first recommend energetically clearing both their homes and offices. (For more information on Space Clearing, watch this video or find more information about Space Clearing here.)

Next, I look at how we can shift the energy in their space and their life. Shifting energy is which is what feng shui is all about!

In feng shui, chi refers to energy. Everything has chi or energy – physical objects, cars, homes, offices and even human beings. You may have heard a person’s personal energy referred to as their vibration.

When we are “in flow” our chi/energy is good and we are vibrating at a high level. You have experienced this when you “happened” to be in the right place at the right time or things lined up easily for you, without a lot of effort on your part.

Then there are times when things are not flowing. You may feel like you are moving through mud and perhaps cannot seem to get any traction. Or you may feel like you are not moving at all. You may, in fact, be energetically stuck.

If you’re feeling stuck or out of sorts, it might be time to SHAKE UP your CHI!

There are many ways to shift out of this stuck place. One of my favorite ways is to shake up your chi. Shifting your chi or energy, allows you to see circumstances from a fresh perspective which leads to ideas and solutions that you cannot access from that stuck place.

The next time you’re feeling stuck, try one of these six ways to Shake Up Your Chi:

  1. Try something new! Try a new restaurant or food, a new activity, a new experience, a new way of doing something or learning something new (take a class).
  2. Take a new route. Drive down a different road. Take a different route to or from work. Walk a different way. I remember walking the opposite way that I normally would go and saw so many things I never noticed walking the other way. For peeps in Maui, swim at a different beach or hike a new trail.
  3. Move your furniture around. This method shifts the energy in your space in a very real way. My landlord recently brought me different living room furniture and a different kitchen table and it totally changed the energy I felt in that space and opened it up too. Creating more flow by clearing walkways through your house helps too.
  4. Change up your routine. Do your daily activities in a different order, like getting dressed before you look at your phone or meditating, exercising or walking at a different time of day. You could also go in and out a different door (hello front door!), use different dishes – maybe even the fine china. Eat in a different room, like that dining room that is used so rarely. Even putting your right sock or shoe on first instead of your left can shake up your chi!
  5. Pick a random letter and call someone you haven’t talked to in awhile (thanks for this one Gary V). Talking to an old friend or a family member you haven’t chatted with lately can be a great way to remind you what’s important in life too.
  6. And, the ultimate way to shake up your chi?! Go on VACATION or on a RETREAT!!! Yes, it’s true! Changing your physical environment is a wonderful way to shake up your chi, especially if you are visiting a place you have never been or doing something you have never done before.

Comment below to let me know if you try any of these or what your favorite ways are to shake up your chi!  If you want to try #6, the Vitally You Retreat on Maui is the perfect opportunity.

Are Your Sink & Stove Arguing?

Standard

If you’ve been in my tribe for awhile you may have heard me say that your home both reflects and affects you. Everything is energy and the things in your home and the way they are positioned impact you.

How do you know if your sink and stove are arguing?

Look at the placement of the sink and stove in your kitchen. If the sink is directly across from the stove, this is considered an “arguing” sink and stove. This is energetically challenging because it can literally cause arguing in or outside of the home. Many clients don’t mention arguing as an issue, but when I point out the arguing sink and stove and ask them, they agree that they do argue and often right in the kitchen between the sink and stove!  Once we remedied the issue, the arguing subsided.

There are two options for using Feng Shui to remedy this challenging situation:

1. Place a round rug between the sink and stove or place a rug in front of either the sink or stove that has a pattern with circles on it.

OR

2. Hang a crystal from the ceiling between the sink and stove. A 20 mm crystal is a good size. The crystal should be round and made with at least 30% lead (this has a balancing energy to it). The crystal should hang freely and can be hung with a 9″ red (lucky color) thread or 9″ fishing line. In Feng Shui the number 9 is auspicious and is about reaching new heights (and who doesn’t want to do that?!)

The round energy of the rug or crystal will disperse the arguing between the sink and stove and balance the energy in the space.

If arguing continues to be an issue after the adjustment is placed, please reach out to me as there are other circumstances within the home that can also contribute the energy of arguments.

I would also recommend that you energetically clear your space if there has been a lot of arguing in your home (either during or before you moved there, as in the case of a divorced couple having lived there prior to you).  Watch this video for instructions on how to clear your space with sage.

Your Stove Can Increase Wealth

Your Stove Can Increase wealth
Standard

In Feng Shui stoves represent wealth and abundance no matter where in the home they are located. This comes from the belief in ancient China that stoves represent wealth because that was the way you fed your family. The more burners you had, the wealthier you were because you could feed more people.  Stoves nourish the occupants of the space and friends and family who come to visit and share meals there as well.

You can boost your wealth and abundance using your stove by:

  1.  Keeping your stove clean – this shows respect for the nourishing aspects and attracts good chi or energy.
  2. Putting pots and pans away – we don’t want to dowse our wealth by covering the burners. If you have a tea kettle that you like to leave on the stove, you may choose one that is reflective or place it on a different burner each day.
  3. Use all the burners instead of just the ones in the front – activating all of the burners will bring more abundance to you, like firing all the engines in a jet gives it more power.

Stove Placement

Another energetic challenge I see in many homes is the location of the stove. Many stoves are situated so that the person cooking has their back to the room. This is a challenge because then you are not in the “command” position of the space. This can lead to feeling unprepared for what is coming at you in life and being surprised by what unfolds.

To remedy this situation, I recommend placing a mirror or reflective surface behind the stove. This adjustment is powerful for 2 reasons:

  1. It allows you to be prepared fro whatever happens in your life (and to see what and who is coming up behind you) and…
  2. It effectively doubles your burners and therefore doubles your wealth!

Powerful Feng Shui Stove Adjustment
This adjustment will really give your abundance a boost and activate your wealth!

For 9 days in a row, turn on all the burners on your stove on high for a few seconds until they are bright red. While they are lit up, visualize abundance in all forms flowing to you. The intention to attract more abundance and wealth into your life is the most important part.

Let me know what happens and what forms of abundance you attract into your life as you do so!

Ups & Downs ~ Feng Shui for Stairs

Standard

Stairs and steps are necessary for moving from one level to another. Yet stairs can impact your life depending on where they are located, the type of steps and risers that are used and what they face.

Stairs are heavy and can bring down the energy in those areas of your home. Steps can also cause “up and down” energy in the area of the Bagua where they are located. For example, a staircase in the center of your home (which relates to health in the Feng Shui Bagua) can have an up and down effect impacting your health so sometimes it’s good and sometimes it is not so good.

Steps can also confuse the energy, as in the case of split level entries. The energy and opportunities come in the door, but then they aren’t sure where to go… to go up or down or stay in the foyer?

Another common placement of stairs that is challenging is right across from the front door. This leads the energy upstairs instead of keeping it in the main living area where it can have the most positive effect. Or the energy drains right back out of the house causing loss of money and opportunities.

Some staircase issues may leave you feeling drained. For instance, stairs ending at a bedroom door may cause it’s occupant to feel drained. Open risers don’t allow the energy to flow to the upper levels and can also lead to feelings of being unsafe or drained.

Curved Staircases

Preferably, stairs are curved and have no landings, which allows for a gentle flow of energy to the upper level. Landings stop the flow of energy through the space.

The greatest offender in the realm of stairs in Feng Shui are spiral staircases. Think of this like a corkscrew boring a hole in whatever area of the home it is located. Spiral staircases typically have open risers as well, which can leave you feeling dizzy, unbalanced and unsafe.

Balancing the energy of your stairs to bring more harmony to your life

No need to worry or freak out about your stair issues. There are Feng Shui adjustments to remedy most everything!

  • Steps in the Center
Hang a 40-50mm round crystal (with 30% lead which also has balancing properties) over the stairwell. This will also serve to honor your home since it’s in the center!
  • Split Entry
Hang a small (20mm with 30% lead) round crystal or place a round rug in front of the steps. Then, direct energy up to the main living area by placing something to attract attention and energy there (a beautiful vase, a piece of art, a plant, etc.)
  • Stairs in Line with the Front Door
Hang a small (20mm with 30% lead) round crystal in between the front door and the steps. You can also add pictures or art along the walls to slow the energy down as well. Then, direct the energy into the main living area with an attractive item that draws guests’ eyes to that space instead of up the stairs.
  • Stairs Ending at a Bedroom Door
Hang a small round crystal between the door and the steps, which will disperse the energy coming at the door.
  • Open Risers
Close them in, if possible and desirable or add lights along the stairs to direct the energy upwards.
  • Landings
Light this area well. A light that shines up here will bring the energy up to the second story of the home and keep energy moving.
  • Spiral Staircases
Add lights along the staircase to get the energy flowing up and to slow the “corkscrew” down. You could also add plants under the stairwell to anchor it and feel more balanced and grounded as you are ascending and descending these stairs. The home I stayed at in Paia had a spiral staircase outside and they did a lovely job of anchoring the staircase by adding a trellising plant that wound through the railing. It was beautiful to see the blooms as you went up and down the stairs, too.

What’s under your stairs?

This is an important area of your home because whatever is stored here affects you. Don’t store any type of water under a stairwell as this can be harmful to children in the home.

Whatever you store under the stairs will grow, though, so it’s a wonderful place for wealth bowls, safes, money, work items (if you want more work that is!), altars, books and luggage (to increase travel opportunities).

Remember Feng Shui is all about balancing the energy in your space!

Doors Affect Your Voice & More

Standard

In Feng Shui, doors represent the voice of adults in the home (windows are the voice of children – see more tips for children in Back to School Feng Shui Tips). Your doors may be having a bigger effect on your life than you know.

Door issues can cause:

• Arguing
• Complaining or whining
• Confusion
• Lack of direction
• Voices to be silenced
• Blocked energy
• Money going “out the door”
• Relationship conflict
• Slanted vision of life or self
• Opportunities to be limited

One of my clients was a couple struggling with Career issues. He was looking for a new job and she was uncertain about her career path. Balancing an issue with the doors in their Career sector had amazing results for them. The day after they made the adjustment, he received a call back for a third job interview and subsequently got the job. A short while later, she was offered a new job opportunity that she wasn’t even looking for. Balancing the energy in your space CAN shift what’s happening in your life!

Below are a few common door issues and cures to help you start using your “voice” more effectively. Remember, intention is key so focusing on what you want is as important as placing the cure.

  • Having too many doors in an area can cause confusion or lack of direction in that part of your life. Hang a small round crystal (30% lead) or place a round rug in the middle of the doors. This will help balance the energy and create clarity, focus and direction.
  • Have you or others in your household been complaining? Check for squeaking or creaking doors. A little WD40 will go a long ways to stop the complaining “chatter” of the doors and people.
  • Do your front door and back door align (where if you rolled a ball from one it would go out the other)? You may have plenty of money coming in, but this will door issue will lead to it going right out the back door. Place something round anywhere between the two doors (round rug, crystal, bowl, table, etc.) This will deflect the escaping energy and help you save and keep more of what you are earning.
  • Does your new neighbor have a sliding glass door, but no deck? This is considered a “dead” door because it doesn’t lead anywhere. Buy them a sun catcher or a mirror to hang on the door to remedy this dead energy.

Problems with doors lead to an inability to voice your opinions and express yourself. Make sure all of your doors can open fully taking care not to store things behind them. Read more tips for your front door in Shut The Front Door.

Bells Brrrrring Good Things

Standard

Bells are commonly used in Feng Shui for adjustments and for attracting energy and opportunities. Bells are used in many religious and spiritual practices as well. Bells even symbolize holidays such as Christmas or the winter season (think sleigh bells). There’s something magical about the sound of bells that makes you stop and listen. The sound of church bells ringing or a doorbell certainly gets your attention.

Bells represent movement and also have a calling or attraction energy. They can be used for protection and decision making as well. Brass bells are often recommended and you should personally like the sound or tone of the bell if it is something that you are using within your home or office.

So what about bells and Feng Shui? What can a little bell do for you?  Use bells as an adjustment for:

  • Clearing the energy in your home or office
  • Helps you find your ground and keeps your personal balance
  • Front door to brrrring in opportunities
  • Office door to call in new clients
  • Clearing energy in rental spaces/hotel rooms/vendor booths
  • Hotel room door for protection and a feeling of safety
  • Protecting your purse
  • Protecting $$ in your cash box or cash register
  • Ringing over clutter to help you decide what to keep
  • Helpful People corner of your desk to call in more clients

Bells can also be used as an adjustment for certain door situations in Feng Shui. For example, If you have a “empty door” (a door that leads nowhere as in the case of a door to a deck that hasn’t been built yet) you can hang a bell on the door handle, either inside or outside, to remedy this “going nowhere” energy.

Another one of my favorite ways to use bells is to call the money back when you have a door in your Wealth area. My client Amy experienced the power of this adjustment first hand.

“I have always been interested in Feng Shui and have even tried to apply it to my home and office space myself…although without any great success. When I learned that Kim would come and do a consult at my home, I jumped at the opportunity! I was amazed at the subtle changes or fixes I could do and what an amazing impact these can make.

I hung a bell with a purple ribbon on my patio door ‘to call the money back’ and just found a 401K investment from a previous employer valued at almost $100K! I also started as an Independent Meeting Planner a year ago and have had a very prosperous first year that ended with a business trip (and mini vacation) to Hawaii in November. My home feels harmonious and I am energized by all the wonderful things that are happening!”

Amy-Marie Lemanski, AML Events, Plymouth, MN

You can hang your bell with a purple ribbon as Amy did (symbolizing wealth) or use a 9″ red ribbon. Red is considered an auspicious color in Feng Shui and 9 is about reaching new heights as it’s the last number before the numbers start over.

Find a bell you love and start brrrrringing in good things!

Change your environment to SHIFT your mindset and your life

Standard

Changing your external environment helps you shift your mindset and your life. When you are in a new environment, like when you are traveling , your focus shifts to experiencing and noticing all of the new things around you. While I was in San Diego recently, I was captivated by the ocean, the birds, the seals and even the squirrels. Looking at these things I felt tremendous gratitude and joy. I could not look away. I was so engrossed in the scenery that I could not think of anything else. Being in this environment completely cleared my head.

Here’s the thing…you don’t need to get on a plane or travel to some distant or exotic place (although that’s fun to do) to clear your head. Try one of these ideas for gaining a fresh perspective, clearing your mind and shifting your life:

  • Visit a new place (state park, store, friend’s house)
  • Take a different route to work
  • See a new play or movie
  • Eat at a different restaurant
  • Spend time with a child…they see things as fresh and new
  • Watch animals at the zoo or in nature
  • Drive on a road you’ve never used before
  • Take a different walking path
  • Walk the opposite direction around the lake than usual

Get out of your head by changing your external environment. This leads to appreciation/gratitude and more joy on your life’s path to Finding Your Fiji.
