The Energetic Challenge of Ashes

Keeping ashes in your home is a Feng Shui Challenge

Many people keep the ashes of their loved ones in their homes and often they are placing them in a location within the home that is energetically harming them. The energy of non-living things (not only ashes, but also dried flowers and other “dead” items) can create many difficulties — everything from lost opportunities and income to health and relationship challenges.

Dead things and ashes, whether human or pet remains, represent stuck or stagnant energy and it is best to remove them from your home. If you have dead trees in your yard, remove them. If you have plants that are dead or dying and cannot be revived, remove them.

Note: If the plant was placed as a Feng Shui adjustment and died, it has likely taken the energetic “hit” for you. Thank it for it’s service to you and replace the plant with a bigger or more expensive one.

Remove dried flowers unless they have special significance to you, such as a wedding bouquet. Consider whether you can remember the event through pictures with the living flowers instead. If you wish to keep the dried flowers, preserve and honor them by placing them in a shadow box or other container.

Many of my clients do not wish to remove the ashes of their loved ones from their home. In these cases, I make recommendations on where the ashes can be placed to do the least harm. Let’s first be clear about where ashes should not be placed within the home:

  1. In the Bedroom or outside the bedroom door. The bedroom is your place of rest, rejuvenation and romance. Keeping ashes here can negatively affect your health as well as your romantic relationships, where the deceased loved one is literally coming between you and a vibrant life with those who are still living and with your own body that is still alive.
  2. In the Dining Room. The dining room is where you take in food to nourish your body. We want living things in this space to signify life-giving energy to your body.
  3. In the Kitchen. The kitchen is where your food is cooked, which also nourishes your body and the stove is located here, which is symbolizes your wealth so keeping ashes in this location can affect both your health and your finances.
  4. Near the Front Door. As you’ve read in my previous blogs, the front door is considered the “Mouth of Chi” where all the energy and opportunities come into your home. Keeping ashes, or other non-living things in this area can push opportunities away and prevent abundance from flowing to you.

Ashes you wish to keep should be placed in a common area, like a family room or living room and well away from the front door, kitchen, dining room or your bedrooms.

Do you wish you could connect with your loved one who has passed? I can help you with this! Through my work as an Angel Card reader and psychic I’m able to connect you with your loved ones. I’ve found these souls have beautiful messages for you and are so happy when I’m able to relay them and share the ways they are present in your everyday life. To learn more about my Angel Reading services and book your reading visit my website.

There is a special Feng Shui adjustment called the Sealing the Doors Ceremony that is beneficial and recommended to be performed when:

  • You are keeping ashes in the home
  • You’ve had bad luck in a house
  • You’ve been robbed
  • Occupants are feeling unsafe
  • Your home is located across from a church, cemetery or funeral home
  • You suspect other living spirits are present within your house

To obtain a copy of the Sealing the Doors adjustment, please email me at I will request that you honor the Red Envelope tradition in exchange for receiving the adjustment.
Sealing the Doors Kits are also available for purchase on my Finding Your Fiji Etsy site.

Feng Shui for Work: Desk Placement Tips

Take charge of your career by moving your desk

Do you feel out of control at work? Surprised or unprepared for what comes at you or like you’re handling too many pesky details? The position of your desk is an important factor that affects how you feel at work, your productivity and your reputation.

If your desk is…

  • Vulnerable to the door (meaning you can’t see the door from where you sit – like when your back is to the door) you may feel unprepared and surprised by what or who comes in. It’s an uneasy feeling that can not only make it difficult to focus but also leave you feeling like you’re constantly putting out fires rather than doing the business shifting tasks.

Desk Vulnerable to Door

  • Too close to the door you are in what we call in Feng Shui “the Gatekeeper” position and you are likely handling a lot of things that could be handled by someone else. If you’re the boss and you’re in this position, you may be doing secretary type work or have employees coming to you constantly with issues someone else could be handling.
  • In line with the door there is a lot of energy coming at you and you may find it difficult to focus on your work.

Desk Gatekeeper & In line with door

So, where should your desk be placed? In the COMMAND POSITION, of course! The command position is the farthest location from the door, facing the door. Ideally, I like to see a solid wall behind you as that provides more support than a row of windows, for instance.

Desk Command position

In Command Position

What do I do if I cannot move my desk?

If you cannot move your desk and you are:

  • Facing a wall or vulnerable to the door, add a mirror in front of you that will allow you to see the door when you sit at your desk. The mirror allows you to see what’s coming at you & to be prepared.
  • In line with the door or too close to the door, hang a small round crystal between you and the door. Ideally this would be hung from a 9” red thread or ribbon. The round crystal helps balance the energy and disperse it so it’s not hitting you as you sit at your desk.

Being in the command position (or using the recommended Feng Shui adjustments) puts you in control of your career and your business. It allows you to feel prepared for what’s coming at you and brings you feelings of peace and calm. When you place your desk in the command position, you’ll be better able to focus on your work and worry less about the unexpected.

BONUS Tip! Get a high back chair with arms. This is about being the executive in your business/career. You don’t see high level exec’s sitting on a folding chair, do you?

Health – Center Of It All

In Feng Shui and in life, health is key.

The center area of the Feng Shui Bagua represents Health. It touches all other areas of the Bagua, just as the state of your health affects every area of your life, right? Your health affects your creativity, your children, your relationships, your reputation, your finances, your family, your ability to learn, to travel and most definitely affects your career.

There are many things in the center of your home/Bagua that may be affecting your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health on an energetic level. To learn where your center is, review my blog, Your Space Reflects Your Life – What Is Yours Saying?

The center of your home, as a reflection of your health, should feel safe and welcoming. It’s a bonus if you can actually sit in your center. Add the color Yellow (which is the Feng Shui Health color) or the element of Earth (anything square, earth tones or earthy material such as ceramics) to your center to give your health a boost.

If you have any of these situations in your Bagua center, they could be affecting your physical, mental, emotional or spiritual health:

  1. Clutter = Stuck energy and it drains you physically and mentally. It can cause fatigue and depression as well as weight issues or a sense of heaviness. For tips on clearing clutter, check out these blogs:
Clear Clutter Once and For All!
    Clearing Clutter in “Disguise”
Do You Need a Clutter Buster?

  2. Bathrooms = Health going down the drain or getting flushed away. We love our metaphors in Feng Shui! For more of the dirty details and what to do to alleviate the draining energy, check out my blog Down the Drain: How Toilets Affect your Life.

  3. Hallway = Energy picking up too much speed, feeling like you can’t catch your breath or slow down enough to relax. If your bedroom is at the end of a long hallway, this can cause digestive issues.
  4. Stairs = Up and down health.
  5. Stove, Fireplace or Furnace = Burn up your health.

As always, whenever you are doing an adjustment, your intention is the most important ingredient.

Remember, never make adjustments when you are tired, angry, lonely or hungry. You want to feel good when making changes to put good energy into your space!

There are many areas besides your center that can be affecting your health. If you are having serious health issues, I recommend consulting with a professional Feng Shui practitioner to help shift the energy and support your return to optimal health.

Boost Holiday Cheer

Boost Holiday Cheer wherever you are in the world with these 12 Quick Feng Shui and Energy Tips!

Holidays are a time of joy, of stress, of fun activities, parties and obligations. Sail through this year’s holiday with ease and grace.

#1)  Hang a bell on your front door to attract good energy and opportunities and gain clarity about your career. You can leave the bell there all year long if you like. Bells also help you (and others) make decisions. See my Bells Brrrring Good Things blog for more information on the magic of bells in Feng Shui adjustments.

#2)  Balance the fire energy in your space. With the holidays comes a lot of red (fire energy) and green (wood energy which feeds the fire). By adding a balance of the other elements, things will feel calmer:
Water ~ Shape is wavy, Color is black/navy blue, Material is water
Metal ~ Shape is round, Color is white, Material is metal
Earth ~ Shape is square, Color is yellow, Material is earth/clay rocks/ceramics

#3)  Keep your stove clean and use all the burners. This will activate more wealth and abundance since the stove represents wealth. Read more about the meaning of Stoves and get my 9 Fast Feng Shui Fixes here!

#4)  Send love to family and friends, especially those that seem to irritate or annoy you at this time of year. How do you do that?
Envision love coming from your heart (could be a pink mist, red or pink hearts, balloons or just a cozy, loving feeling) and send it out to the person as you are thinking about them. Imagine that mist, color or hearts enveloping the person in cozy goodness. Ahhhhhh….Love truly transforms all things! For more about romantic love, review my Feng Shui for Love blog.

#5)  With all the holiday excitement, it’s important to stay grounded. Taking a walk outside, even if it’s only for 10 minutes will help clear your head and ground your body in the hear and now. Or visit somewhere new to gain a fresh perspective. Find more thoughts on Change Your Environment to Change Your Life here.

#6)  Clear out the clutter! Get rid of everything you no longer love or use to make room for the things you really want. Pick up Marie Kondo’s amazing book, “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” or review my 3 blogs on clearing clutter. Clutter is not your friend any time of the year, but especially now with the extra holiday decorations about.
Do You Need A Clutter Buster?

Create Your Dream Space by Decluttering

#7)  Find a quiet space to recharge. This could be a meditation or reading nook or even a hot bath with candles and soft music can whisk you away from the hustle and bustle of this season. Maybe cozying up on the couch to watch a holiday classic or rent War Room that just came out on Redbox which will not only recharge, but inspire you!

#8)  Drink lots of water to keep hydrated, to stay grounded and to help cleanse your system of the delicious non-healthy food you’re enjoying. This is especially needed when drinking alcohol so have a glass of water with your egg nog or wine!

#9)  Take an Epsom salt bath to clear your personal energy field. Emotions run high at this time of year and it’s helpful to keep your own energy field clean and clear of other people’s muck.

#10)  Clear your home by smudging with sage. This has also been proven to reduce the bacteria in your space so it will keep you mentally, emotionally and physically healthier. This is especially important after hosting parties as people drag in lower energies and often leave them behind when they go. I have Clearing Kits on my Etsy site.

#11)  Set your intentions for each holiday gathering you attend. Think about how do you want to feel and what you want to experience. Peaceful, joyful, relaxed, happy, fun, laughter, love & connection are a few words that come to my mind. The drive time to your holiday gatherings is a great time to do intention-setting!

#12)  Start dreaming of next year. What do you want to be, do and have in the New Year? Use the Feng Shui life areas to bring balance to 2016 by setting goals or intentions for each area: Wealth, Family, Knowledge, Career, Travel/Helpful People, Creativity & Children, Partnership, Fame & Reputation and Health (which touches all areas of your life). Sit down with magazines and tear out pictures of things you like. Think about places you want to visit or stuff you long to do. My Intentional Goal Setting blog provides more ideas on making next year an amazing success!

If you need some help dreaming, I’m offering a Feng Shui Dream Board Workshop in Woodbury, MN on January 16, 2015. For those outside the Twin Cities metro area, watch for my Online Dream Board workshop coming soon!

I’m also offering a 4 week series for love relationships in February in Burnsville, MN:  Enhancing and Attracting Relationships.

Intentional Goal Setting

Have you ever set a goal and not attained it?

What held you back? You were excited when you set the goal, anticipating how good it would feel when you achieved it, right? Maybe you even created a step by step plan and started on it. Yet, something held you back. You stopped working on it. You gave up. You may have even kicked yourself for not following through. You wouldn’t do that to your best friend, but you’re hard on yourself when you don’t accomplish the things you set out to do.

Intentional goal setting will change all of that. By owning your goals, you will find yourself excited to work on them and make progress faster than you ever have before. Excited now?! Let’s get this party started!!

What does it mean to be intentional?

InŸtenŸtion is defined by Merriam Webster as:

  • The thing that you plan to do or achieve
  • An aim or purpose
  • A determination to act in a certain way
  • Import, significance
  • What one intends to do or bring about

Intent suggests clarity and is more deliberate and purposeful. It also connects your actions with your mind and heart. Goals are simply targets and without intention, it’s difficult to accurately aim or even take an interest in moving towards that target. Intention involves forming a clearer picture about your outcome and getting at the reasons why you want it and how you’ll feel when you get it.

OWN your goals

Owning your goals helps you become invested in them. And when you are invested, you have a stake. This creates built in accountability – to yourself! (Need more accountability – I offer private coaching!)

There are 3 steps to OWNing your goals:

1)  O = Outcome  Determining what it is that you really want
2) W = Why   Understanding why you want this. What’s the point?
3)  N = Now    Taking action. Doing something to get the energy moving.

The 3rd step, “Now taking action” is often misconstrued as the most important piece of goal achievement. In reality, action is only 1% of the equation. 99% of goal achievement is knowing your Outcome (what you want) and Why you want it.

To determine what you really want for your life, it’s helpful to look at your current circumstance (where you are) to decide where it is you want to go. Being a Feng Shui expert, I like to use the life areas that correlate to the Feng Shui Bagua.

Think about the following 9 areas of your life and where you are on the happiness scale of 0 – 10 with 0 being completely unsatisfied and 10 being overjoyed and loving this area of your life.

Rate 0 – 10    Life Areas
Wealth  (Money you inherit, win, earn, feeling abundant, gifts)
Family   (Relatives, siblings, extended family, close friends)
Knowledge (Education, inner wisdom, spirituality)
Career   (Job, journey in life or passions, activities you love)
Helpful People & Travel (Feeling supported, travel, treated fairly)  Creativity & Children   (Children/kids, pets, creative endeavors)Partnership (with significant other, biz partner, self, God, Source)
Fame & Reputation (How you’re perceived, good name, integrity)
Health  (Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being)

Now, circle the area with the lowest score. That is the one we’re going to focus on to create our first Intentional Goal. You’ll be able to go through this process with all the rest of your life areas or simply pick the 2-3 areas that you want to focus on this year.

You are not completely happy with this area of your life, so you know what you don’t want, right? Take a piece of paper and make a list of the things that aren’t going well in this particular area along the left hand side. Think about what’s really bothering you. If it’s your Wealth area, for instance, your list may look like left hand column below.

To determine what it is that you DO want, turn each statement in the left column around to state in the positive and present tense what you would prefer to be happening in that area of your life instead.

Things I don’t want
Debt accumulating
Not enough money coming in
Too many expenses
Feel out of control with spending
Don’t know how to budget
More month than money
No money for fun stuff I want to do
Can’t help others (tithing)
& so on… you get the idea.

What do I want?
Debt paid off
Plenty of money/income
Bills paid easily and effortlessly
Feel good about finances
Established budget
Pay all bills on time monthly
Money for fun activities w/o guilt
Donating to my favorite charities

Remember to state what you want in the present tense and positive. This helps the Universe/God/Source clearly hear what you really want and will magnetize it to you so much faster!

The second part of OWNing your goals is determining your why. Think about why you want the things in the right hand column. Would you be able to relax and have less stress? Would you be able to take care of your family’s needs? Would you have more fun? Be able to work less and enjoy life more? Would you be able to help those less fortunate or have more time to volunteer? Would you buy a new house? A new car? Take a vacation?

How will you feel when you reach that goal or have the outcome that you want? This is the most important piece of the Why puzzle. Your goals carry an energetic vibration and in order to set goals with intention, it’s vital that you line up with that energy.

Everything is Energy
Objects certainly carry a vibration. They may make you feel good or bring your down or be neutral. Environments have an energetic vibration, too. You know how when you go into a room that’s cluttered and it just doesn’t feel good to be there, right? And when you walk into a garden filled with beautiful flowers and green grass and running water, you feel at ease. People have an energetic vibration as well. When you are around someone who’s vibration is high, they are happy and make you want to smile. You’ve also been around Eeyore types for whom nothing ever seems to go well. They make you doubt what in the world there is to be happy about.

Your goals and dreams have an energetic vibration, too, and you need to be vibrating at the same energy level as your dream to draw it in and sustain it. This is part of the reason why so many lottery winners are broke after the first year. Their vibration doesn’t match their money and so they are unable to keep it.

Strive to consistently feel how you will feel when you’ve achieved or accomplished this goal, as if it’s already a reality and it’s only a matter of when it will happen. When you get into the feeling place of your outcome, then taking actions and the right actions comes naturally.

You’ve determined your OUTCOME (what you want) and got into the feeling place of your WHY. So NOW it’s time to take action. When are you going to take action? Right NOW! The sooner you begin taking action once you’ve set your outcome/goal, the more likely you are to continue working towards it and achieve it. What steps would you need to take to achieve this goal? Decide on one baby step you can take today!

It’s time to get your goals down on paper. There is nothing more powerful than writing out exactly what you want for the New Year and creating a plan to achieve it.

Intentional Goal Setting Guidelines

1) State your Outcome in the positive (avoid using don’t, not or no)
2) State it in the present tense
3) Use “I am” or “Now that I am” statements

Remember to include your OUTCOME (what you really want) and your WHY (why you want it and how you will feel when you get it). The NOW (baby step you will take to get started on your goal today!) will be part of your planning process.

An example of an Intentional Goal using the Wealth area above would be:
“I am so excited and grateful now that I am paying off all of my debt and creating a steady stream of $10,000 a month net income. I love the feeling of paying all my bills in full every month and having money left over to take my family on a cruise this summer and donate monthly to my favorite charity.”

An Idea to Anchor Your Intentional Goals

Dream Boards are a powerful way to anchor your goals and intentions. The creative act of cutting out pictures and words and placing them on a board that you can look at day after day engages your right brain and “gets you out of your head”. It’s also a way to increase your FUN LOAD and enjoy dreaming.

If you are interested in creating your own Dream Board, Finding Your Fiji has developed a unique Feng Shui Dream Board process. The kits are available now on our Etsy site. We also have a live class in the Twin Cities on January 16th. Click here to find out more:

Bells Brrrrring Good Things

Bells are commonly used in Feng Shui for adjustments and for attracting energy and opportunities. Bells are used in many religious and spiritual practices as well. Bells even symbolize holidays such as Christmas or the winter season (think sleigh bells). There’s something magical about the sound of bells that makes you stop and listen. The sound of church bells ringing or a doorbell certainly gets your attention.

Bells represent movement and also have a calling or attraction energy. They can be used for protection and decision making as well. Brass bells are often recommended and you should personally like the sound or tone of the bell if it is something that you are using within your home or office.

So what about bells and Feng Shui? What can a little bell do for you?  Use bells as an adjustment for:

  • Clearing the energy in your home or office
  • Helps you find your ground and keeps your personal balance
  • Front door to brrrring in opportunities
  • Office door to call in new clients
  • Clearing energy in rental spaces/hotel rooms/vendor booths
  • Hotel room door for protection and a feeling of safety
  • Protecting your purse
  • Protecting $$ in your cash box or cash register
  • Ringing over clutter to help you decide what to keep
  • Helpful People corner of your desk to call in more clients

Bells can also be used as an adjustment for certain door situations in Feng Shui. For example, If you have a “empty door” (a door that leads nowhere as in the case of a door to a deck that hasn’t been built yet) you can hang a bell on the door handle, either inside or outside, to remedy this “going nowhere” energy.

Another one of my favorite ways to use bells is to call the money back when you have a door in your Wealth area. My client Amy experienced the power of this adjustment first hand.

“I have always been interested in Feng Shui and have even tried to apply it to my home and office space myself…although without any great success. When I learned that Kim would come and do a consult at my home, I jumped at the opportunity! I was amazed at the subtle changes or fixes I could do and what an amazing impact these can make.

I hung a bell with a purple ribbon on my patio door ‘to call the money back’ and just found a 401K investment from a previous employer valued at almost $100K! I also started as an Independent Meeting Planner a year ago and have had a very prosperous first year that ended with a business trip (and mini vacation) to Hawaii in November. My home feels harmonious and I am energized by all the wonderful things that are happening!”

Amy-Marie Lemanski, AML Events, Plymouth, MN

You can hang your bell with a purple ribbon as Amy did (symbolizing wealth) or use a 9″ red ribbon. Red is considered an auspicious color in Feng Shui and 9 is about reaching new heights as it’s the last number before the numbers start over.

Find a bell you love and start brrrrringing in good things!

Clear Clutter Once and For All!

Clear Clutter Once and For All using the KonMari Method of Tidying Up!

Clutter is not Feng Shui’s friend. I’ve written about this topic before in Do You Need a Clutter Buster? and Clearing Clutter in Disguise. There are great and useful tips in those blogs.

So why am I bringing it up again?

  1. Because despite my best efforts, I still have some clutter and I know you do too.

  2. I discovered an amazing decluttering method that actually works and had me clearing bags and bags of clutter from places in my home I didn’t think were cluttered!

  3. Clutter represents stuck energy in Feng Shui. It energetically drains you, lowers your vibration and can cause weight gain, fatigue, brain fog and many other issues.

  4. I want to help you allow the energy to FLOW in your space. And, with the clutter cleared, your Feng Shui adjustments will be much more effective! Essentially, doing this work will create a vacuum attracting everything you want right into your virtual vortex.

Marie Kondo, author of the Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, has spent a lifetime of trial and error figuring out the most effective method for decluttering your space. She had literally been obsessed with tidying (don’t you just love that word?) since she was a little girl.

How is the KonMari decluttering method different?

  1. Tidying (or decluttering) only needs to be done once. Marie’s clients have never had a relapse which is proof her system works. Having only done the first 2 parts of the system (clothes and books) I can already see how this works and more importantly FEEL the difference in my space.

  2. The KonMari Method shifts the way you look at and experience the things in your home, teaching you how to make decisions with your heart, not your head!

  3. Marie’s method honors your possessions by caring for them and finding a permanent place for everything in you home to “live”

Breakdown of the KonMari Method

A) Tidying involves 2 actions:

1. Discarding
2. Deciding where to store the items you choose to keep

B) Clear clutter by category, not by place. I mentioned this briefly in my Do You Need a Clutter Buster blog. However, Marie’s book breaks this down for you by providing a specific order:

1. Clothes
2. Books
3. Papers
4. Miscellaneous
5. Mementos

C) Discarding
The KonMari Method introduces a twist to this time-worn decluttering tradition. Instead of focusing on what to throw away, you are focusing on decising what to keep.  And here’s the golden nuggest of advice to take from this book and blog, if you don’t read further:

1. Take everything in that category out whereever it may be in the house and put it all in one place to sort.

2. Decide by picking up, touching and holding every single item and feeling what energy this sparks for you. You ONLY keep the item if it “sparks joy!” This means that you don’t think about whether you wore it yesterday or have never worn it, how much it cost, who gave it to you and so on. The only standard you use in deciding whether to keep something is if you LOVE it.

I also like Marie’s method because she thanks the items being discarded for their service. Even if you never used something, it has fulfilled it’s role. It may have brought you joy when you purchased it or when you received it or it may have been useful in some way. Someone else will love this item or if it’s broken, it may be time for it’s retirement.

D) Storage
You’ve heard this before – A place for everything and everything in it’s place, right? The way Marie determines where things should go is unique because:

  1. All things of the same category are stored together. Take safey pins, for example. How many of these to you have all over the house? Pulling them all out and putting them in one spot helps you see how much you have (and need) of things. I personally discovered a stash of toilet paper I had totally forgotten about. Needless to say, I won’t need to buy that for a while!
  1. Placing things where you put them away, not where you use them. It takes only a moment to grab something from it’s storage space, yet not knowing where you put something can cost you literally hours of time searching for it.
  1. Marie likens your items not having a home to you not having an address. Your things feel lost and uncared for. They don’t wear as well, look as good and often will break.

Marie recommends folding clothes so that you are able to see all the edges in the drawer. Folding clothes helps you see stains and tears and shows you care for your clothes so they will last longer.

Fold each piece into a simple smooth rectangle by folding the sides in first, then in 1/2 or 1/3.  Folded clothes when standing on edge should fit the height of the drawer. See Marie’s book or You tube videos for further instructions on how to fold. Fold socks in half and then in thirds with toes inside. Rolling them stretches out the bands.

Arrange clothes in your closet (the ones that seem to like to hang better) so they rise to the right. This means the heavier, longer and darker color clothes will be on the left.

Seasonal suggestion
Marie recommends keeping all of your clothes out (once you clear those you don’t love, you will have room) and simply organizing them by weight.

One of the key Feng Shui principles is that everything is energy. Your possessions, like your home itself, need to be treated with care. Making sure you surround yourself only with things you love and making sure everything has a home shows appreciation, respect and love for your things and results in those things loving you back by lasting longer and looking better.
