Feng Shui Properties and Placement of Mirrors

Mirrors are a wonderful tool to use for Feng Shui adjustments yet they also carry a lot of energy, so you want to be certain you are placing them appropriately.

Mirrors have many properties and in Feng Shui represent the element of water. They provide vision, bring clarity and can also lift energy “up” in a space. Mirrors help us see and be prepared for what’s coming to us (illuminating our blind spots). Further, mirrors affect how we view ourselves.

Common Feng Shui Uses for Mirrors

  • Filling in areas of the Bagua that are missing, such as when a home is not a complete square/rectangle (read this Blog for an explanation of the Feng Shui Bagua)
  • Expanding spaces
  • Remedying a “blocking” wall (a wall that is too close to the door)
  • Adding the element of water to a space
  • Softening a “blade” edge created by an odd-shaped bedroom
  • Deflecting energy
  • Doubling burners on your stove, and thus your wealth
  • Pulling in a bedroom that is in front of the front door or outside the bagua
  • Lifting energy in bathrooms
  • Creating a “window”
  • Containing or dousing fire energy (fireplaces, furnaces, stoves)

I often make Feng Shui recommendations that involve the placement of mirrors. For some adjustments, size doesn’t matter and we’ll use small “lipstick” sized mirrors to fill in a missing piece or to act as a virtual carwash at the entrance to an office. For other adjustments, such as pulling in several bedrooms that are in front of the front door, we want a more substantial mirror.

Mirrors Dos

  • Have a full length mirror in your home as this gives you a clear vision of where you’re going, of who you are and how you make your way through the world
  • Use a mirror behind your stove to “double your burners” and thus double wealth
  • Cover mirrored closet doors in bedrooms
  • Have a mirror at an appropriate height for children
  • Use mirrors in bathrooms to lift the energy (counteracting “draining” toilets)
  • Add a mirror in a room that needs more windows (we want a 3 to 1 window to door ratio in each room) except in bedrooms
  • Consult a Feng Shui practitioner before placing a Bagua mirror (octagonal shaped) as these mirrors carry very powerful energy and are warranted in very few cases

Avoid…

  • Cracked mirrors (and glass in photo frames)
  • Antique or tinted mirrors (cloud your vision and decrease clarity) These mirrors may also carry the energy from the prior owners.
  • Mosaic or mirrored tiles (cutting energy can lead to health issues)
  • Split mirrors in bathrooms as this splits the couple
  • Mirrors that reflect toilets, dirty drains or clutter (don’t want to double that!)
  • Placing mirrors too high/low (tallest and smallest adults should fully see their face)
  • Mirrors in the bedroom (it’s a lot of energy which can disrupt sleep)
  • Seeing your reflection in a mirror while in bed (it will bring a third person into your relationship)

NOTE: There are many mirror placements I cannot recommend without laying an accurate Bagua map on your space. For these situations, a home consultation (in person or via Skype) is recommended for proper placement.
